HELENSBURGH will have a Festive Lights switch on festival this year - thanks to the Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games Committee.

In a surprise U-turn the Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee agreed this week to allow the Games committee to co-ordinate a switch-on event.

Just last week the local councillors announced that they would be co-ordinating the event and inviting people to participate but this week they changed their minds.

A statement issued by the council said: "Helensburgh and Lomond local councillors have welcomed the offer by the Helensburgh and Lomond Games committee to take the lead role in organising and running the Christmas event on November 29 this year.

"Officers of the Council are working closely with the organisers to ensure a successful event. Details of the event are available from HLG but include a street market, entertainment, carols and a switch-on ceremony."

Councillors Andrew Nisbet and James Robb who were previously co-ordinating the event have welcomed the news.

Councillor Robb said: "The Council had made available an equal ring-fenced budget for Christmas lights for each of the four sub-administrative areas.

"The Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee have already unanimously agreed how this will be spent in our area.

"In Helensburgh the generous donation from Kevan and Caroline Mundie has ensured there will be Christmas lights in addition to the Christmas tree in Colquhoun Square.

"There is no council funding available for the Christmas event itself. We were planning a smaller community event this year to mark the start of the Christmas season on November 29 around a formal switch on of the tree.

"However, the response from the community was fantastic with many groups and individuals volunteering to help. The offer from the Helensburgh and Lomond Games Committee to take on all responsibility for organising and running the event has been welcomed from all those previously involved.

"There may be fewer Christmas lights around town this year but with the community spirit being shown the prospects for this year's Christmas event look bright."
