RESIDENTS of Garelochhead are being urged to come to a public meeting to discuss the future of a community group under threat.
The GRA - Garelochhead Residents Association - has been operating for more than two decades, but lately has been struggling to fill the vacancies on the committee.
The Association runs alongside the Garelochhead and Portincaple Community Trust and the Garelochhead Community Council - the latter of which was recently brought back from the brink to be reconstituted following a by-election, after it originally failed to attract enough interest to reform.
A public meeting has been organised for early next month (Thursday December 3) where it will be proposed that the Association should disband. This comes after discussions by members of the Association's Management Committee.
The meeting will be held in the new church hall in Garelochhead from 7.30pm and Councillor George Freeman, who also chairs the Association, is encouraging locals to come along and have their say.
If the public concur that the Association should disband, Councillor Freeman confirmed that a decision will be made on how the Assocation's fund should be distributed as well as clarification on the disposal of its assets.
A number of the Association's committee members have recently been elected to the Community Council and others are considering strengthening the membership of the Community Trust.
The general view, according to Councillor Freeman, is that it will be better to have two strong organisations operating rather than continue with three who are all competing to attract volunteers from the same small community.
He added: "I would encourage residents at Garelochhead to come along to the meeting so that their views can be taken into account when the proposal to disband is considered."
