HOGMANAY revellers are being urged to beware of severe cold - with temperatures expected to drop well below freezing.
More sub-zero weather has been forecast, prompting fears that first-footers enjoying a Ne'erday tipple could be at risk from ice and snow underfoot, coupled with abnormally low temperatures.
The mercury is expected to read -4 degrees Celsius, but taking the wind-chill into consideration it will feel more like -8 degrees.
Those who are going out to celebrate the start of the new decade are being urged to think first and foremost of their safety and wear clothing suitable for the icy conditions.
Health experts are warning that after a few drinks it takes longer for your reflexes to work, or you just don't feel the cold at all - but it will still affect you.
Helensburgh doctor Nick Dunn said that people should enjoy the new year celebrations, but be wary of how much alcohol is being consumed.
"Whether your tipple is champagne, whisky or beer please try to use it to improve your experience, and avoid a trip to hospital in the process.
"Alcohol has the benefit of aiding relaxation, reducing inhibitions and has been known to help parties go with a swing.
"However, it can also reduce co-ordination, slow thinking and reflexes and sometimes cause staggering - a risk to those on the ice over Hogmanay - with the potential of fractures and head injuries."
