Dorothy was trapped down a gas hole

A HELENSBURGH woman walking to her sister's house suddenly found herself stuck in a deep hole with her leg jammed under a gas pipe.

Dorothy Lafferty plunged into the hole in the dark outside her sister's home in Ben Bouie Drive after a plastic barrier had been moved out of the way.

Her leg jammed, and kneeling in water, Dorothy could only shout for help until her sister Linda Mardell heard her and rushed outside.

Police, fire brigade and ambulance attended as work began to free the trapped and terrified woman.

She said: "I had been to see our other sister round the corner and was walking to Linda's house to get a lift home and the next minute down I went.

"I actually thought I had gone to Hell and I just panicked because my foot was stuck between the pipes. There was a strong smell of gas and it was making me feel sick. I was kneeling in water and it felt like I was sinking."
