TWO families were evacuated when fire broke out in a lochside mansion on Tuesday night.
The fire was reported in Oakbank on Shore Road, Kilcreggan just before 10pm and at its height three fire engines from Cove and Garelochhead were in attendance.
Firemen using breathing apparatus fought the flames which came through the roof of the Victorian villa and afterwards spent some time searching for hot spots and hidden pockets of fire to ensure that the blaze was over. The main blaze was extinguished by about 12.30am but it took the fire men until 3.22am to complete the task.
The house is divided into two flats and both families were evacuated and taken in by villagers for the night.
It is thought that the owners of one of the flats are out of the village on a holiday cruise and the property was being looked after by family members.
Fire investigation officers moved in on Wednesday morning to try to establish the cause of the fire.
