The road between Helensburgh and Cardross will be affected by the works.

MOTORISTS face more than six months of hold-ups and delays on the road between Helensburgh and Cardross as a new gas main is laid right through the main tourist season.

And the whole idea has been described as "an absolute nightmare" by Mike Crowe, chairman of the Cardross Tenants and Residents Association.

He is hoping that enough people will protest over the proposal that the plan will be rethought.

The contract is due to begin towards the end of April and Mike describes the plan which will involve three areas of roads works at a time, as "impending havoc" and said: "For me the quicker the public are made aware of it the more chance we have of trying to talk some common sense into the gas board.

"I for one, find it incredible that the public had no idea that this work was planned until two weeks before the contracts are to be given out to complete the work.

"How on earth was it considered not to be important enough for the public to be involved and at least asked what their opinion was?

"Whose idea was it to leave it to the last minute, for me it most certainly is not in this areas best interest to not have consultation well before any planned contracts are issued."
