DRIVERS in the Helensburgh area can expect long term disruption starting next month.

Work will begin on May 10 on the laying of a gas pipeline from the Dumbarton side of Cardross to Charlotte Street in Helensburgh and is expected to take six months to complete.

The work will begin in three different places meaning three different sets of traffic lights and delays along the main route to Dumbarton.

A team will begin digging up East Princes Street at Charlotte Street and another will start work just past the Geilston Hall and the third team will be starting work on the Dumbarton side of Cardross.

Two public exhibitions of the plans have been held in the area this week, one in Cardross on Monday evening and a second in Helensburgh on Tuesday.

Attended by Paul Slater, operations manager of contractors Morgan Est Plc, project manager Richard Ward, Robert Dolan project manager for Scottish Gas Networks and Anne Nelson of Scottish Gas Networks, members of the public were able to look at the plans and ask questions.

Neither event was hugely attended with more people at the Cardross one than in Helensburgh but Anne said: "We didn't have a huge response from the public but all the details are on our website and we will be updating it regularly so that people know what is happening.

"We will also be keeping in touch with the local councillors and community councils and trying to keep people informed throughout the project.

"We have worked closely with the roads authority and the police to ensure that diversions are clearly signposted and we will try to make it as easy as we can. Sign posting will start as far back as Milton on the A82."

She added that a feasibility study on various options for routing the gas pipe had clearly indicated that the best route was along the main road.
