A DETERMINED fashion shop boss is taking on a cancer charity mountain challenge.

Jennifer Martin, assistant manager of M & Co in Helensburgh, will climb four mountains in two days next month for Cancer Research UK.

She is looking forward to The Big Small Isles Challenge, which means climbing to the highest point on the islands of Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna - amounting to a 21km ascent.

Jennifer said: "Like most people, I have been affected by cancer. I have witnessed people close to me fight the disease and defeat it, but I have also lost members of my family to it. The hardest thing I have found, is feeling helpless."

Despite donating a percentage of her pay cheque each month to Cancer Research UK Jennifer wanted to do more.

The challenge was set up by M & Co, as the charity is the company's partner charity, and 20 staff from all over the country will be taking part.

She continued: "I believe I am the only person from Helensburgh doing it. Apart from a big personal challenge and some spectacular scenery to be had, I have an opportunity to give something back, albeit not a huge amount in the grand scheme of things but I want to do my bit."

Jennifer lost both of her grandparents to cancer and her cousin has battled Hodgkin's Disease for six years so fundraising for the cause is something close to her heart.

She added: "My cousin is 25 and she has had cancer for six years. She fought so hard and is doing really well now.

"I completely admire her.

"All my family live down south and I don't get to spend a lot of time with them so when you feel helpless this is something I feel I'm giving back.

"I don't get as much time as I would like to be doing activities like hillwalking, and as much as I spend six days out of seven running around on my feet in store, I don't think it will compare.

"I'm just trying to raise as much as I can, so far I've raised £800, which is with generous people coming into the store.

"The customers have given me lots of encouragement."
