A FUNDRAISING drive has been launched to raise "essential" cash for Helensburgh lifeboat station.
Scotmid Co-operative aim to raise £150,000 for the RNLI, some of which is due to benefit the local station.
Part of the money raised will be used to cover the cost of crew training for a year for Helensburgh RNLI lifeboat crew.
Staff and customers at 280 stores across the Scotmid and Semichem networks in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North of England aim to raise the cash over the next 12 months for the lifesaving charity.
Robin Lane, volunteer helmsman for Helensburgh lifeboat said: "As a charity support like this is essential.
"We're all very grateful at Helensburgh for this support and that some of the money raised will help cover the cost of our crew training for a year. Training is crucial in helping prepare lifeboat crew for the myriad of rescues we are involved in.
"For example, in the last 10 days we have helped assist aircraft with hydraulic problems, people in the water and capsized dinghies.
"I'd like to thank the Scotmid and Semichem staff in advance for everything they do."
John Brodie, Scotmid Co-operative chief executive, said: "Our Scotmid and Semichem businesses are delighted to be supporting the RNLI as their charity partner for the year 2010/2011.
"The RNLI volunteers are our unsung heroes, risking their lives to save others at sea and are well deserving of our support. We have set a target of £150,000 and I'm sure with the enthusiasm and efforts of our staff, customers and suppliers we can reach, and even exceed, that target."
