PENINSULA parents are hoping to sink plans to close two schools - using the UK’s nuclear submarine fleet.

Campaigners living near the Faslane naval base claim 3,000 naval staff will move to the area in the next 10 years.

Prince William visited the naval base on Thursday where he unveiled a plaque to officially name the base as the home of the UK’s submarine service.

His visit came after Argyll and Bute Council announced plans to shut 26 schools including nearby Kilcreggan and Rosneath Primary Schools.

The council plans to close a third of its 80 primaries under plans to save £15 million, insisting school rolls will fall by 19 per cent in the next ten years.

But parents claim the schools on the Rosneath Peninsula 10 miles from the base are vital for the influx of new naval families. Kilcreggan and Rosneath pupils would be sent to Garelochhead Primary nine miles away.

Mum-of-two Joanne O’Donnell, 38, of Kilcreggan said: “It is nonsense to consider closing two schools when we estimate 3,000 people are coming to live and work here." READ OUR FULL COVERAGE OF THE SCHOOLS CLOSURE DEBATE IN THIS WEEK'S ADVERTISER.
