MORE than 100 people celebrated the life of a submariner in a memorial night which raised a staggering £4,000.

Moly's run a-shore, organised in memory of Ian Molyneux, who died on board HMS Astute in an alleged shooting, was an emotional but fantastic night, which raised nearly £4,000 for the Royal Navy Royal Marines Charity.

Amanda Logan, who organised the charity night, said the turn-out and generosity of sailors and Helensburgh residents was fantastic.

She said: "The auction alone raised £1,800. People were very generous. There was a top up for auction that you can buy on the boat for £20 but it went for £180!

"We emptied the collection tin and people had been throwing in £10 and £20 notes.

"I was a bag of nerves on the day hoping it would all run smoothly.

"The DJ was amazing and did a great job of getting everybody up dancing.

"It was a packed programme. All the feedback has been brilliant." Gill Molyneux, Ian's wife, travelled from her home town of Wigan to be at the event, which was held at the Drumfork Club in Churchill.
