THE Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is returning to Helensburgh - and the new service has started with outreach sessions in the Jobcentre.

The news has been welcomed by Provost Billy Petrie who said this week: "I am delighted that CAB is coming back to Helensburgh. It is a very valuable service in these austere times and the people of Helensburgh and Lomond have had to travel to Dumbarton.

"I have been requesting that the service be re-established for some time now."

Geraldine Day, bureau manager, told the Provost: "The development proposal includes the recruitment of a designated post to establish a service in Helensburgh, recruiting and training advisers once established to further develop the service in Garelochhead and the Rosneath Peninsula."

She continued: "The vision is eventually to offer a face-to-face service two to three days per week and support the telephone advice service currently being delivered from Lochgilphead.

"We will seek three year funding for the project but before we proceed with grant applications we wish to further demonstrate need through the delivery of an outreach service in Helensburgh town centre."

She has been in contact with the council's executive director of development and infrastructure to look for council premises but in the meantime has reached an agreement with Walter Matheson, manager of Jobcentreplus, for the use of a room in the Helensburgh centre.

The CAB offers free independent, confidential and impartial advice on a range of issues including debt, benefits, housing, consumer, employment and relationship issues.

And anyone who needs advice on budgeting saving, credit and borrowing, mortgages, incurance, pensions and retirement planning can get the help of a trained money adviser through CAB's money advice service.
