David Dickson, an ex freestyle swimmer from Perth, Australia, is travelling to Glasgow in June to take part in a Voices of the Commonwealth concert and is hoping to find his Scottish rival after nearly 50 years.

David, a past swimming team captain for Australia, shared the podium with Bobby McGregor MBE – known as The Falkirk Flyer – in 1962 and in Kingston in 1966.

And he is hoping to trace the former Commonwealth and 1964 Olympic medallist when visiting Scotland in the summer.

David told the Advertiser: “It would be grand to catch up with Bobby after all the years. After retiring from swimming and following his Falkirk High School days Bobby went to Strathclyde University, and graduated with an Honours degree in Architecture.

“He was an architect and operated a business known as Hamilton & McGregor. This firm had offices in Sandyford Place, Glasgow and East Abercrombie Street, Helensburgh.

“A happily married family man, Bobby returned to Helensburgh, where he lives with his wife, Bernadette and their two sons, David and Gordon.

“Bobby is retired and is thought to reside in Helensburgh or surrounding area.” Bobby McGregor held the world record for the 110 yards freestyle and in 1966, in the space of five weeks he won a Commonwealth Games silver medal and a European Championships gold medal, then broke his own world record for the 110 yards at the British Championships in 53.3 seconds.

He retired from competitive swimming after the 1968 Olympics at the age of 24 with a fourth place finish in the 100 metre, freestyle final.

It was at the end of this year that Bobby was awarded an MBE by the Queen for services to sport.

The concert David is taking part in takes place on Sunday, June 1 and comprises of eight choirs from Scotland and one choir from Northern Ireland, England, Wales, Canada, Australia and The Seychelles.
