On Tuesday, April 1, about 50 people set off from the Scottish Parliament and walk across Central Scotland to the Faslane nuclear base.

Representatives from Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament said in March of last year the Scottish Parliament passed a resolution which called for the removal of nuclear weapons – the Spring Walk aimed to take this message to the gates of the Trident base.

The walkers are setting off two days after Alex Salmond confirmed he would not use Trident as a bargaining chip in post-independence negotiations.

Arthur West, chairman of the Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said: “We welcome the First Minister’s confirmation that Trident would not be a bargaining chip. The Spring Walk is a journey across Scotland to tell Faslane that Trident must go. On our way we will share our vision of a nuclear free Scotland with all those we meet. When the walk passes through Glasgow, on April 5, there will be a march and rally in the city centre.” The walk set off from Scottish Parliament Tuesday, April 1, followed by a march and rally on Saturday, April 5 in Glasgow’s George Square with the walk expected to arrive at Faslane, by 4pm, on Monday, April 7.
