And former Helensburgh man Jason Crawford – who founded The Mean City Roller Derby – will return to the town to take part in the weekend’s showpiece.

The men’s roller derby team is joining forces with the ladies Glasgow Roller Derby to take part in a series of special displays at the Helensburgh Toyota sponsored Roller Magic rink on the former Mariner’s site on West Clyde Street.

The Roller Magic Rink is just one of a host of activities taking place over the weekend, organised by Helensburgh and Lomond Chamber of Commerce.

Jason, known as BruiseDog #6, told the Advertiser how he got into skating, he said: “I started roller derby as a referee for Glasgow Roller Girls (now Glasgow Roller Derby) in 2011 as my wife Lindsay (TurbuLinz #747) joined their recruits.

“I instantly loved the sport as skating is something I have always enjoyed. I went to school at Hermitage Primary and then onto Lomond School. I hated sport at school, I was the first to try and find any excuse to get away from playing rugby in the cold winter mornings.

“However, I could be spotted fairly regularly skating along the esplanade in Helensburgh. Skating has always come naturally to me and I hadn’t even considered the possibility that I could apply that skill to a team based sport.

“I really wanted to play and at that time there were no men’s leagues in Scotland. I soon realised that I wasn’t the only person that felt this way and with a few of my fellow male referees we started the first Scottish Men’s League The Jakey Bites.

“After our first game in Newcastle against Tyne and Fear, I realised that it was only a matter of time before Glasgow would have its very own men’s league which would be Mean City Roller Derby.” Roller derby is a full contact sport played by two teams of five members on traditional quad style roller skates anti-clockwise around a track.

Game play consists of a series of short matchups, called jams, in which both teams designate a scoring player, the jammer, who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer whilst hindering the opposing jammer; in effect, playing both offence and defence simultaneously.

The roller rink will be in Helensburgh on Saturday and Sunday and skates will be available for hire. The roller derby displays will be at 10am, noon and 3pm on Saturday.

Another highlight of the Doon the Watter festival will be the sand sculpting workshops which are being sponsored by, and held at, M&T Builders’ Merchants yard in Charlotte Street.

But those who don’t manage to book a space at the workshops can go along to watch the fun and see the sculptures grow.

There will be sand art in Colquhoun Square, brought to Helensburgh by Party Palz.

Budding artists can have a go at making their own sand art pictures to take home with them and Party Palz will also bring along some very well known characters to meet their fans.

Any youngsters keen to work off energy can try out the CBF mini tennis in the square or netball with Helensburgh Netball Club.

Also in the square there will be a market with local businesses and a farmers market, a barbecue being provided by the Buffet Shop and down on the front there will be the YOUR Radio Sound stage with a line up of entertainment, a fire engine (Saturday only) and a Navy RIB. Codona’s fairground rides will be open at the Pier Car Park throughout the festival, and fans of the Waverley will be able to see the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer as she docks at the pier around noon on Saturday. On the Wednesday evening SOS Fitness will run its Ricky Hatton Boxing class in Colquhoun Square and the evening will be open to anyone over the age of 15 who would like to try it out.

And throughout the whole festival there will be a Commonwealth Flags competition going on in businesses and shops around the town as well as a best dressed shop window competition.

A spokesman said: “This is the first Helensburgh Summer Festival organised by Helensburgh and Lomond Chamber of Commerce and we hope that townsfolk and business people alike will make the most of it and enjoy the events.
