The disused gas tank has been an eyesore near to East Princes Street since it was decommissioned on September 21, 2012, and work is expected to be completed in three months.

A spokeswoman for Scottish Gas Networks (SGN) confirmed: “We have started work to dismantle the gas holder station at Maitland Street in Helensburgh.

“We are hopeful this work will be completed by the end of September.” Councillor Aileen Morton is pleased with the progress, she said: “The gasometer really is going. Standing at the bottom of Grant Street it’s astonishing to see all the changes that have taken place in just a short space of time – Farmfoods in place of BJs, the gasometer being demolished, the bin lorry depot now a car park, and the old Clyde Street School being turned into the new Civic Centre.” The gas holder was built in 1928 and plans were in place to demolish it within eight years of it being decomissioned, but this was brought forward to coincide with work ongoing across the town.
