The energetic performance ran for four nights in the Victoria Halls with large audiences turning out to watch the Rogers and Hammerstein classic.

The musical was first performed on New York’s Broadway in 1949, featuring songs Some Enchanted Evening and I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair, and quickly became a classic – winning Tony Awards and Oliviers throughout the years.

But it was the turn of Helensburgh Savoy to reprise the fan favourite featuring characters Emile De Becque played by Kenny McLean, Nellie Forbush played by Elise McLean, Steve Sweenay as Lieutenant Joseph Cable, and May Connelly as Bloody Mary.

The show opened on Wednesday night (November 5) with the cast putting months of rehearsing behind them and taking centre stage.

Set during World War II when the US army has stationed a base on a South Pacific island, a young nurse, Nellie Forbush, falls in love with a middle-aged French plantation owner, Emile de Becque.

The two have a troubled romance as Nellie slowly discovers the details of de Becque’s past. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Cable arrives to head a mission to create a spy post on a Japanese-held island.

Chorus member Elaine Donaldson, told the Advertiser: “I thoroughly enjoyed my experience this year in South Pacific.

“Everyone works together to produce an amazing show, attending weekly rehearsals can be tough, but by the end of the run you realise all the months of hard work have paid off and you end up missing everyone due to the bond you have created working with each other.

“And it was really nice to welcome some new faces to Helensburgh Savoy this year, I hope they will return again next year, and they will spread the word of how enjoyable an experience it is.”
