Sian Gomersall and Tricia Imrie, were selected to join celebrity choirmaster Gareth Malone’s 100-strong Military Wives ‘super choir’ which performed at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Home in London.

The choir’s journey was filmed for a two-part BBC documentary which is being shown over Christmas.

The sell-out concert to commemorate the First World War – part of the BBC’s annual Proms series – took place on Sunday, August 3, the eve of the 100th Anniversary of the day Britain entered the war.

On the day, the choir was joined by life-size puppets from the National Theatre’s production of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse.

The documentary tells the story of how Gareth Malone selected the 100-member choir and then led it through a gruelling rehearsal schedule in preparation for its unique commemorative performance.

The Proms Military Wives Choir was made up of women from 42 different military wives choirs located at bases across the UK as well as overseas bases in Cyprus and Germany.

At the concert the women performed a series of classical pieces including Elgar’s The Snow and a moving setting of Tennyson’s poem Home They Brought Her Warrior Dead, with many of the pieces composed at the time of the First World War.

Sian told the Advertiser: “Performing at the Royal Albert Hall really was a once-in-a-lifetime event and the greatest honour.

“It did not come without hard work and gruelling rehearsals but it was an amazing experience and I am immensely proud to have been selected from the hundreds who auditioned. It is also really appropriate that the concert specifically remembered the role that women and music played during the First World.” Tricia, whose husband is based at Faslane, added: “It was a dream come true and best of all I got to meet an amazing group of women from across the military community both here in UK and abroad, who I am now proud to call my friends.” Part one of the documentary was shown on Tuesday, December 16 and the second episode will be shown on December, 24 at 8.30pm on BBC2.

The full Prom will be broadcast on BBC2, on December 26 at 5.30pm.
