The stars of the award-winning time travel series Outlander have been spotted filming scenes in the Scottish Capital.

Hollywood actress Caitriona Balfe, 37, and co-star Sam Heughan, 36, walked through Edinburgh's old town while wearing their costumes.

The Irish actress could be seen playing with her mobile phone on the set at Tweeddale Court in Edinburgh while wearing a grey woollen coat.

Sam Heughan, who plays Highland warrior Jamie Fraser in the series, was decked out in a warm woollen jacket topped off with a 1800s hat called a tricorne.

A morning tour carried out by Mercat Tours, who tell of the history of Edinburgh, looked on at the busy filming area.

Glasgow Times:

The stars of Outlander are in Edinburgh to film the third series of the hugely popular show which has gained a cult following in the USA.

Scotland's tourism agency VisitScotland predicted last year that the show, which streams in the UK on Amazon Prime, would lead to large numbers of visitors to the country by fans.

Fan Donna-Marie Gardiner could not contain her excitement on twitter as she spotted signs of the production rolling into the city.

She said: "Excited for season 3 eeeeeeeek man I love my city"
