A Scottish film-maker has spoken of how a sexual assault by a woman at a party left him on the brink of suicide.

Frank McGowan was attacked by Cheryl Cottrell at a house party in Glasgow in May 2015.

The attack came after Cottrell found out he was gay and began making sexually inappropriate comments.

She refused to leave McGowan alone and propositioned him before following him into the kitchen when he left to get a glass of water.

He told The Daily Record he had bent over to pick something up and she assaulted him by violently pushing her fingers inside him.

He said: “I was bleeding and felt like I was being raped by this horrible woman.”

The filmmaker, who was nominated for a Bafta for Looking After Mum, waived his right to anonymity to help other victims.

Revealing the attack drove him to the brink of suicide he said: “Some days, I can’t get out of bed because I’m still gripped by fear. I’ll go to get up and I’ll start sobbing uncontrollably."

She denied attacking Frank but she was found guilty of sexual assault follwing a trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court in August.

She was placed on the Sex Offenders Register and ordered to carry out 120 hours of community service.
