A GLASGOW family is dealing with a double blow after tragically losing their son on a Thai holiday 12 years after their teenage daughter was killed.

John Cairnie, from Milngavie, near Glasgow, is mourning the loss of 31-year-old son Joe who was found dead in a hotel room in Bangkok on Sunday.

The cause of Joe’s death is unknown.

As previously reported by the Evening Times, John’s 15-year-old daughter Suzanne died after being struck by a bus as she crossed a busy dual carriageway in 2006.

It was thought at the time that she may have been distracted by her mobile phone ringing as she walked across Maryhill Road, near to its junction with Canniesburn Toll at around 4.30pm on Monday, September 11 of that year.

Tributes have been flooding in for former Glasgow City Council worker Joe who had been living in Cambridge.

His mum Jayne Bates, who is now divorced from John, led tributes on social media.

Heartbroken Jayne wrote: “Can’t believe this. Trying to ring you. Want you back. Want to wake up and it’s all been a nightmare. Broken is a word. I’m nothing without you, son. I love you with all my heart. Wish I could swap places with you. Oh, Joe. You’re my world, [nothing] without you in it. I can’t see a life. Please this can’t be real.”

Other tributes have been flooding in for the popular young man.

Cheryl Mckenna wrote: “Words cannot describe the heartache my family is facing. Another loved one taken far too soon. Joe Cairnie, I still can’t believe we will never see each other again.”

Michelle Cairnie wrote: “Can’t sleep so looking through photos. Sad to say, but I actually don’t have many photos with Joe. Well, not that I can find. He wasn’t one for taking family photos lol God, I miss you.”

Thomas Peden added: “Deeply saddened to learn tonight of the passing of Joe Cairnie. Many a good time with him at work and good football banter with him. Defo the easiest person to get a bite out and a reaction. Thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

A fundraising page set up to raise £5,000 to bring his body back home to Glasgow smashed its target within hours, with funds currently sitting at over £10,000.

Pal Oliver Mcdonald, who started the fundraiser, wrote on the JustGiving page: “We would like to offer some financial support to Joe Cairnie’s family. Joe did not have insurance and repatriation into the country is very expensive. Whatever donation you can afford would be greatly appreciated in assisting Joe’s family at this tragic time. Thank you.”
