Our friends and families are not bargaining chips for the Tories at Westminster.

They are not a “good hand” in some kind of card game with the rest of Europe.

But if you listen to just about anything Conservative ministers are saying at the moment that’s exactly how they think of them.

And it’s gone beyond just those from the rest of the European Union.

The Tory conference of this past week has to be the most openly racist of any major party in decades and could have easily been confused for a gathering of the far right.

One policy to come out of the conference was that, amongst all this talk of deportations (not that they’re honest enough to use that word), doctors would be safe for now – or at least until we train enough new doctors who were born here.

Like most families, ours has needed the help of doctors in the best and worst situations. At no point did we care on what bit of land they’d been born If someone is willing and able to help you, to save your life, why on earth would you care about where they’re from?

But that is the Britain that is being created by the Tories.

That’s why Ukip gleefully announced they were basically running the government now. Almost everything the Tories announced was a Ukip policy. That’s not a UK I want to be part of.

The most sinister proposal to come from their conference was the racist registers. The Home Secretary wants all businesses to disclose how many of their workers are from outside the UK.

Scotland must say no to racism whether on the streets or at the heart of Westminster.

You can make a stand against the registers at greens.scot/no-racist-registers.

In the West of Scotland we have a proud history of internationalism and solidarity Theresa May’s UK looks nothing like that.

Perhaps it’s time we parted ways.
