Not only does America’s glass ceiling remain unsmashed, but the premises have been handed to a man who has spent his life belittling those women he hasn’t inappropriately groped. A thrice married, serial philander whom the evangelical “Christians” felt able to support.

For the woman who cherished hopes of being America’s first female leader now has plenty of time to contemplate that among the factors which destroyed her ambitions were a husband who also had an unsavoury track record of marital infidelity, and the ex husband of a top aide who sexted pictures of his private parts to a series of women.

And examination of whose email account caused the FBI to make a late intervention in the campaign. But the people I feel most sorry for are those Americans bamboozled by Trump’s simplistic sound bites into believing he could wave a magic wand over the national economy and their own prospects of better paid employment.

By the time his feet of clay are only too visible, not just his supporters, but much of the rest of the world, may wind up the poorer and almost certainly less secure. From the effortless dignity of an Obama to the crass self aggrandisement of the blustering Trump. God bless America?

He’d better.
