Both the Scottish and Westminster parliaments are in their summer recess, but regardless of the season, the job of government goes on and despite the concerted rantings of some opposition politicians, it turns out that since being elected in 2007, our SNP has been pretty good at the “day job”.

So, among their many success stories, here are my Top Ten of SNP achievements in government.

1. Your SNP government has put record funding into the Scottish NHS, employing more than 12,000 extra staff and enabling our A&E departments to out-perform every other area in the UK for the past 26 consecutive months.

2. Your SNP government has built and delivered more than 60,000 affordable homes.

3. Your SNP government has protected free tuition fees, saving Scottish students up to £27,000 over three years, compared to students in England.

4. Thanks to the great work of Police Scotland, recorded crime in Scotland is at a 42 year low.

5. Your SNP government has abolished NHS Prescription charges and scrapped all Road and bridge Tolls in Scotland.

6. Your SNP government's world-leading climate change targets were met - 6 years earlier than forecast and last month Scotland generated enough clean electricity to power 118% of Scottish households.

7. Today in Scotland, we have more people than ever in work and youth unemployment at a record low.

8. In Scotland, small businesses have saved £1.2 billion because of the Small Business Bonus Scheme.

9. Despite what the doom-mongers would have you believe, the world recognises Scotland as great place to invest and second only to London, Scotland has attracted more foreign direct investment than anywhere else in the UK.

10. Thanks to your SNP government every 16 and 17 year old citizen has been given the right to vote in local council and Scottish parliament elections.

Of course, there is lots more to do, but I reckon that's a pretty impressive record by anyone's standard, and we should be proud of having a government that looks after our sick, our elderly, our students, our young people, our small businesses, our environment and our economy so well with the very limited powers it has at its disposal.
