I WRITE in response to Mike McKenzie's letter on HMNB Clyde. I know there is a general election approaching but the SNP must really stop this immature bickering and accept the facts.

The facts are that 11,000 local jobs are sustained by the base. It is the single biggest employer in the area and brings approximately £260 million to the local economy each year. Ask anyone who works in the base and they will confirm this.

The employment figures come from the MOD and the economic impact of the base has been independently assessed. There numbers therefore have a solid basis in evidence.

Now let's turn to the SNP's contention that independence would have no impact on the base as the new Scottish Navy would be based at Faslane. Perhaps the SNP could explain how a handful of frigates, accounting for as few as 100 jobs can sustain a workforce of 11,000.

What does he propose to do with the other 10,900 hard-working families that his party would consign to the scrap heap.

When Mr McKenzie has finished explaining that, perhaps he would tell us why his leader, Alex Salmond, has promised that same new Scottish Navy to Rosyth, not Faslane?

As my mother would say, grow up Mr McKenzie. Before you put pen to paper again, let's start dealing with the hard reality rather than the SNP indulging in fantasy politics.
