Hermitage Park's woes

Comments (1) | Print | Email

I WAS deeply shocked to read that the Helensburgh Study Group regards the Hermitage Park as "a wasted space" which should be built over.

Helensburgh has always been Glasgow's green lung and the Hermitage Park has been its heart where the Millig Mill once operated.

It used to be a well maintained and beautifully cultivated public garden where children could play and pensioners relax peacefully and securely. It also attracted visitors from Glasgow.

It is a sad reflection on the town's deterioration that the park has now been largely given over to drunken hooligans and vandals. In order to restore this central focus of Helensburgh's erstwhile charm, I suggest that funds might be directed towards necessary parental guidance, resources for appropriate policing and park keepers to help ensure respect for the park's upkeep.

To build it over would indeed annihilate the centre of the town's historic green character.

This is deeply upsetting, I was brought up in Helensburgh and spent most of my childhood playing in Hermitage Park. It would be a great shame to build over it.

I agree with spending money in the appropriate places.
