HELENSBURGH’s Gordon Reid is targeting one of wheelchair tennis’s biggest prizes in London in December after winning his third successive Open de la Baie de Somme men’s singles title last week in Rue, France.

World number five Reid beat two of the world’s top three players en route to his latest victory at the prestigious ITF 1 Series event, having started the French tournament with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Sweden’s Stefan Olsson in a rematch of last year’s final.

The British number one went on to beat world number two Stephane Houdet of France for the second time in two matches this season, winning their semi-final 6-3, 6-3 after earning crucial breaks of serve midway through both sets.

Reid then took his performance level to new heights in the final, defeating Houdet’s fellow Frenchman and world number three Nicolas Peifer 6-1, 6-0, dropping just the fourth game of the opening set in a clinical performance that saw the Scot race to victory in just 40 minutes.

“I’m very pleased with my performances this week and my level of play through the event,” said Reid, who won his first Open de la Baie de Somme title in 2013 after beating the world’s top three players in successive days on that occasion before retaining the title last year. “To get three wins in a row against three top 10 players in such fashion here in France is a great confidence boost for me leading up to the NEC Masters in December.

Reid is now looking to improve on his career best third place finish last year at the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London, the venue know as Eton Manor when Reid represented Great Britain at the London 2012 Paralympics. Peifer, who Reid beat so comprehensively in France, was runner-up at the Masters last year.

“I have learnt a lot here and will use that to work on specifics in practice over the next few weeks and hopefully use that as a platform to produce some more excellent performances at the Masters and in 2016,” added Reid, who remains world ranked number five in singles and world ranked number two in doubles this week.
