Helensburgh Tennis Club’s under-12 junior boys team have won their division in their first year.

The junior team squad has been guided by head coach John Wilson and he has praised their dedication and performance over the last six weeks.

John said: “The boys have excelled themselves. They went into each match as underdogs as this was their first season in competitive tennis, they should be very proud of themselves.” The team won 12–0 at Cardross, 10–2 at David Lloyd, 10–2 at Hillhead and 12–0 at Stepps. In their last match they came up against the mighty Giffnock which was always going to be a tough match. Andrew Wilson won his singles match 6–4, 6–3 but Eamon Moy, Elliot and Fisher and Ciaran Hoskins all narrowly lost their singles. The boys bounced back however winning both doubles matches. Final score a narrow 6–7 defeat.

Junior convenor Bobby Kerr said: “The club has always had a great tradition of producing talented junior players and we have committed funds to invest in our young players through our junior development programme.

“We recently paid for some of our older juniors to go on a Tennis Leaders course and they will begin helping out at sessions as part of their development.

“We will also continue to offer free coaching to our junior teams over the winter period.” The club has booked Hermitage Academy’s indoor games hall during October and November on Saturday morning’s 10am to 12pm for the tots, red and orange classes.

The club is paying the hire costs so as to keep the cost to parents at a minimum.

There may be some places available for non-members and parents should email Bobby Kerr at bobby.kerr@tennishelensburgh.org.uk for further details.
