Argyll and Bute Under-15 netball squad competed in their second academy play day of the season recently with some eye catching performances against a strong field.

This was set to be a busy day for the squad who had four potentially tough games to play. However They were strong and confident from their first whistle with defence combinations of Anna Sherry, Lindsay Cormack, Iona Greig and Abbie Murray halting the flow of their opponents.

This allowed the mid court duo of Rachel McAuley and Lia McGrath to shine with their through-court play and in turn to easily feed their shooters.

The shooting trio of Mia Rooney, Holly Brown and Erin Wood were on fire as the squad notched up three comfortable wins, beating South Lanarkshire B 18-6, Renfrewshire B 18-6 and Edinburgh B 22-2.

The girls knew that the last game of the day against Renfrewshire A would be their hardest yet and the speed and height of their opponents was decisive in a 20-6 defeat. Renfrewshire side proved too much with the score ending 20-6 to Renfrewshire.

The U17 Netball squad were in action on Saturday, January 16 at Glasgow club Easterhouse in the first of their regional events organised by Netball Scotland.

The squad had played in the play-off event back in October and had been unlucky not to progress through to the performance section with it coming down to goal difference between Argyll and Bute, Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

The squad’s first match was against Fife 1, who they had previously beaten in the play-off day. The game was a little slow to start with it taking It took the squad until the second half to find their rhythm but they gained a comfortable 22-8 win.

Next up was Glasgow 2, again who they squad had also beaten on the play-off day. The girls started off much better in this game but lost form a little in the second half allowing Glasgow to creep back into the game. However, The defence unit of Lydia Porter-Smith, Rona Wilson and Eilidh McNaughton applied brilliant pressure on the Glasgow attack with the game ending 23-11 to Argyll and Bute.

The final game of the day was against Renfrewshire, who are a fast paced and dynamic squad.

Anne Young, Rona Wilson and Grace Laverty turned over lots of ball in the defensive end. Coupled with some lovely attacking play from Mhairi Cromar and Mackenzie Serpell, who were finding the shooting duo of Eleanor Young and Iona Stewart with ease, Argyll and Bute ran out winners meant that that the half time score was 23-6 to Argyll and Bute. The pressure continued in the second half with Kate Addo playing an excellent rotational circle with Eleanor Young, with Renfrewshire having to answer to the strong and accurate feeds of the Argyll and Bute attackers. Final score 34-14 to Argyll and Bute.
