HELENSBURGH wheelchair tennis ace Gordon Reid lost his number one doubles ranking after finishing as runner-up in the Japan Open doubles last week.

Alfie Hewett and Reid were runners-up in a men’s doubles Super Series final for the third time this year.

Reid won the doubles title in Japan alongside Shingo Kunieda last year but has now dropped back to number two in this week’s world doubles rankings.

Second seeds Hewett and Reid have played all-French partnerships in all four Super Series finals they have contested, including when winning last July’s British Open.

This contest saw them up against top seeds Stephane Houdet and Michael Jeremiasz, who took the title with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win.

Houdet has now overtaken Reid to claim the number one spot.

Reid’s bid to reach the Japan Open men’s singles final for the second year in a row came to an end in the semi-finals.

British number one Reid faced his doubles partner Hewett in the first round of the singles, coming through 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.

He then had little trouble in despatching Sung-Bong Han 6-3, 6-0 in the second round.

Home favourite Takashi Sanada was next up in the quarter-final, but the seventh seed couldn’t make an impression as Reid looked to be hitting top form in a 6-3, 6-2 win.

However, Reid’s title challenge came to an end when he faced in-form Belgian Joachim Gerard, the second seed winning through 6-2, 6-2.

Gerard would lose in the final as Houdet completed a double title win.

Reid now prepares for the French Open next week.
