HELENSBURGH Tennis Club’s boys under-18 team got back to winning ways this week with a 6–0 win at home against Queen’s Park.

After a narrow defeat at Uddingston last week, Helensburgh had been working on new tactics at training sessions.

At number two Tom Barton was never in trouble and showed why he is chasing the number one spot with a 6–0, 6-2 win.

At number one Archie Russell took the first set 6–3, but struggled in the second set against a tricky left-hander who took it to a deciding tie break.

Archie was behind for most of the tie break, but started to attack every point forcing errors from his opponent and was soon in the lead.

He stayed in the lead,their and eventually taking it 13-11. Ross Hamilton and Joe Barton also took their singles with ease without dropping a set.

In the doubles Archie and Tom took the opening set 6–3 and although the second set went to 7–5 for the Helensburgh pair they were never in trouble.

Ross and Joe took their opening set 6–1, but lost the second let their concentration slip in the second set losing it 3–6. The deciding tie-break saw some great tennis from all four players, but in the end it was but Helensburgh who came out won inners 10–7.

In the under-14 boys match all four players easily won their singles.Andrew Wilson, Tavish Hicks, Ciaran Hoskins and Conor Niblock never looked in trouble as they brushed aside their opponents from Queen’s Park.

Conor, nursing a back injury, had to concede the doubles, but Tavish and Andrew outplayed the visitors to record a 5-1 win for Helensburgh.

The men’s first team lost 0-9 to travelled to Virgin Active Lanark and found themselves up against a very strong team and lost out 0-9.

The ladies third team also lost 0-9 to didn’t have far to travel for their match as they were at close neighbours Kirktonhill in Dumbarton. The team were soundly beaten 0–9. Team captain Janette Howieson said the team had trouble adjusting to the hard courts and tight surroundings but conceded Kirktonhill were very strong.
