ARDENCAPLE 2, MILNGAVIE 2 (Ardencaple win 6-5 on penalties)

Ardencaple Under-19s capped what would be many of the players’ last game for the club with a thrilling penalty shootout win over Milngavie in the Michael McGinley Memorial Cup final.

Ardencaple started well and almost took the lead when an overhead kick from Nathan Teague struck the post.

Caple did have the ball in the net when Fraser pounced on a loose ball to beat the keeper, but the linesman had his flag up.

Ardencaple were having the better of the play with Smith looking dangerous on the Caple left. The Helensburgh side were solid at the back meaning keeper Drover had little to do.

Minutes before half time, Smith found the net with a headed Caple in front from a free kick on the Caple left.

Milngavie almost equalised on the stroke of half time with their first serious attempt on goal, but Drover was equal to the task and turned the ball away.

With Percival prominent in midfield, Ardencaple always had the edge and almost added a second when Teague's drive which clipped the post.

Nathan Teague finally got his name on the scoresheet when hammered wasn’t to be denied and hammered home a rebound after the Milngavie keeper parried following a fine shot from Fraser's shot.

Milngavie threw caution to the wind and pulled a goal back after pressure at a corner when a low drive beat Drover.

With minutes to go, a wonder save by the Milngavie keeper turned another Teague effort onto the post.

Milngavie went straight up the other end and equalised with a header from a corner.

Ardencaple looked shattered at losing the equaliser so late in the game.

In extra time, Teague saw another shot hit the bar and it seemed as if Milngavie’s name was on the cup. With no further goals it was onto the drama of penalties.

Some excellent penalties gave the keepers no chance until Milngavie missed their sixth spot-kick to give Caple victory.

Coaches Dunky McBride, Graeme Porter and Andy Steeples thanked the players for their efforts over this season and previous seasons.

Ardencaple hope to have an under-19s team next season with players moving up from the under-17s and some boys born in 1998 still being eligible to play next season.

l While RHU Amateurs are starting an under-21s team and are looking for all the boys born in 1997 to join them for next season.
