Cardross Tennis Club have ended the West of Scotland summer league season with four of their six teams guaranteed promotion.

Another Cardross team also looks odds on for promotion but will have to wait for another result to go their way.

The ladies' first team won their league for the third year in a row, with Hillhead finishing runners up.

Gillian Branch, Caroline McDaid, Carolyn Turk, Karen Muir, Katie Mitchell and Lorna Brown now face a divisional play off match later in the summer to decide the ultimate Division 5 champions, but the goal of promotion was achieved and the girls look forward to competing in Division 4 next year.

The ladies second team have gained promotion after being crowned league champions of Division 7. The ladies performed brilliantly especially under pressure in the last two games to record two 9-0 victories.

Elaine Clancy, Catherine Court, Carla Dobbin, Rona Foster, Janet Hogg, Gwen Irving, Jill and Mia Rooney and Sara Sullivan face their own divisional championship match, but as with the ladies' first team the real goal of promotion and league title is more than they could have asked for.

The gents' first team drew on a solid pool of six with captain David Carmichael able to dip into a strong second team when required.

The nucleus of the team was Alan Macbeath, Ross Kennedy, Graeme Porter, Felix Carpenter, Keith Wilson and captain Carmichael, ably supported by Jim Carruthers, Jamie Miller and Euan Mclatchie from the seconds.

This squad won the Calcutta Cup and have now added the league championship to their titles this year. They will be going for the divisional championship as well and looking ahead to Division Three tennis in the village for the first time in many years next season.

The gents' second team are awaiting the outcome of one match but barring a shock it's likely they have secured promotion with a runner up spot in Division 6 with a very strong showing in their final match on Friday night.

The three players mentioned above combined with Stuart Rae, Allan Clarke and John Johnson showed good form. Alan Crossan and Steven Carmichael provided additional cover for captain McLatchie throughout the season.

The gents' third team also secured promotion from Division 8 with a likely runners up finish, again with one result pending, but promotion is secured. Captain Steve Dobbin lead his team of Gary Glen, Alan Crossan, Max McKay, Raymond Watt, Dylan, Jonny and Iain Brown, with Steven Carmichael providing some cover as required, to a great season and they are all looking forward to next year in Division 7.

The gents' fourth team didn’t get the results they wanted but it was a fantastic season for all the players who competed, and some of the match nights at the club bring something to the membership experience beyond the results.

Captain Iain Brown led his troops of Andrew Stevenson, Paul Clancy, Graham Court, Iain Gray, Duncan McKellar, Mark Rooney, Dylan Brown and Fraser Muir to a mid table finish and results towards the end of the season are encouraging for next year.

All in all a great team tennis season and attention now turns to the club championships and the Helensburgh and District Vets event, being hosted by Cardross on July 23.
