BURGH wheelchair tennis ace Gordon Reid has won a silver medal in the first of his two finals at the Rio Paralympics.

Reid and his partner Alfie Hewett saw their hopes of gold dashed after defeat in three sets to the French pair of Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer on Thursday.

But Reid will have a second chance at golden glory on Friday night when he and Hewett are on opposite sides of the net in the gents' singles final.

The British pair made too many unforced errors in Thursday's doubles final against a French duo who performed to a consistently high standard throughout the match.

Houdet and Peifer took the first set 6-2, and though Reid and Hewett showed great character to level an engrossing match with a 6-4 win in the second set, they ran out of steam in the decider, losing 6-1.

Friday night's gold medal match in the gents' singles is scheduled to get under way at approximately 7pm.

Speaking after Gordon won silver in Rio, sportscotland’s Chair Mel Young said:

“Congratulations to Gordon Reid for winning his first Paralympic medal. He and his doubles partner Alfie played some scintillating tennis to reach the final where they just lost out to the French pair Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer.

“2016 has been an incredible year for Gordon, winning the Wimbledon singles and doubles titles, Australian Open singles, French Open doubles, and now he’s won his first Paralympic medal.

“Gordon is also in the singles final against his doubles partner Alfie, so he knows he will have two Paralympic medals to his name. He’s such a popular character in Scottish sport and I know everyone at Tennis Scotland and in his support team at the sportscotland institute of sport will be delighted with Gordon’s success.”
