Members at Helensburgh Tennis Club gathered at the club to show their support for Gordon Reid as he competes in both the singles and doubles wheelchair tennis events at the Rio Paralympics.

Gordon and siblings David, Emily and Stephen have been members at the club since they were youngsters and mum Alison also plays regularly.

The club is planning to honour Gordon when he returns from Rio following his successful wins at the Australian Open in Melbourne and Wimbledon earlier in the year.

The whole club is hoping that he will be adding a couple of Olympic gold medals to his achievements.

In team news the men’s first vets team started their 2016 season with a very tough match at Ardgowan tennis club in Greenock.

Bobby Kerr and Mark Leonard took the opening set 7 – 6 but were always playing catch up in the second set but managed to force another tie break.

They led 3 – 1 at one point but a series of cruel net cords saw their opponents snatch the set.

It was neck and neck in the final set but Ardgowan managed to break Helensburgh’s serve at 5 – 4 and hold theirs to take it 6 - 4.

On court two it was a similar story as Bill Ram and Keith Love lost their opening set 6 – 7.

They pushed their opponents hard in the next two sets but narrowly lost 4 – 6, 4 – 6.

The ladies third team were in great form when they played host to Busby.

Jackie Hunter and Alison Fotheringham were never in trouble as they sailed through their match 6 – 2, 6 – 3, 6 – 3.

Janette Howieson and Jane Chambers were in similar form winning 6 – 1, 6 – 2, 6 – 3.

The ladies first team continued their impressive run of form on Monday evening when they took on Hillhead at home.

Karrie Walters and Ann Morison were quickly into their stride and were just too consistent for their opposition, collecting all three sets for the loss of only five games.

However the match between the second couples turned into a marathon affair. Liz Wylie and Gay Black seemed in control of the first set at 5 - 2 up, only to be taken to a tie-break by Hillhead.

The Helensburgh pair quickly re-grouped and won it convincingly and, although they were always behind in the second set they managed to take it on another tie-break.

The third set was again one full of long rallies and with the home pair beginning to tire slightly, the Glasgow side just managed to keep their noses in front and secure it 6 - 3.

Helensburgh therefore emerged the winners 5 - 1 and now have a break until their last match away against Uddingston at the beginning of October.
