GORDON Reid starts his bid to join Andy and Jamie Murray at the top of the year-end world rankings next week.

Andy made British history by ending the season as world number one for the first time after a dominant display against Novak Djokovic in the final of the World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena. He joined doubles player Jamie at the top of the rankings as they became the first brothers to occupy top spots at the same time.

Helensburgh’s Reid has the chance to make it a treble of Scots at number one when the 25-year-old takes to the court at the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters in London, which starts Wednesday.

The Paralympic champion goes into the tournament, comprising the top eight players in the world, at number two in the rankings behind Stephane Houdet. However, with only 94 points between the two the race to top spot looks set to go to the wire.

Tournament success throughout the year has ensured Reid, Andy Lapthorne, Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker will all fly the flag for Britain at the ITF’s year-end wheelchair tennis singles championship at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.

Reid said: “I know you are only as good as your last match and the competition will be really intense at the NEC Wheelchair Masters.

“I’m just going to knuckle down and work hard to give myself every chance to win this title. That would be a dream finale to my year.”

Lapthorne added: “It has been a long and memorable season with a Paralympic silver medal in Rio among the highlights.

“I’m really pleased to be in the mix at the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters in front of a home crowd.”
