Lomond and Helensburgh Under-16s’ coaches are “so proud” of their team as they get set for the Scottish Schools Bowl final at Murrayfield on Wednesday (2.30pm kick-off).

The combined school and rugby club side beat Gala 30-29 earlier in the month and will face Hutchesons’ Grammar School.

And both Stuart Louden, head of rugby and PE at Lomond School, and Iain Fletcher, the chairman of the youth section at Helensburgh Rugby, were delighted for everyone involved with the side as they gear up for their first youth national final.

Louden said: “I’m incredibly proud. This is a monumental occasion for Lomond and Helensburgh Rugby.

“We have a very committed bunch of boys and an equally committed coaching team, and they have worked together for a number of years now.

Fletcher added: “It’s a massive achievement for the kids and the coaches, as they’ve seen them progress since they’ve been in P2.

“It is one of those times when coaching, as an ex-player, gives you more satisfaction.

“It’s going to be a great day for the club and the school.”

Angus Guy was among the stars in the semi-final, as he scored a hat-trick against Gala including a try in the closing minutes

And Fletcher is hoping the youngsters can repeat their heroics from last time out, with plenty of Burgh support travelling to cheer on the team.

He said: “It was a great victory, especially considering Gala beat Bell Baxter High School, who are a well-known rugby school. To win it in the way we did was great and hopefully we can repeat it next week.

“I’d expect a couple of hundred people and Hutchy are involved in another final so there will be plenty of people at the game.”

And Louden is hoping the kids can show the big crowds expected, with eight finals taking place on the Murrayfield pitches that day, their attacking rugby on a national stage.

He said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Lomond School and Helensburgh Youth Rugby to showcase the positive rugby that we try to play.

“Lomond and Helensburgh Rugby compete every Saturday against other school sides in the Black Conference, which is based in and around the West of Scotland, and so it has been a fantastic experience for the boys to play teams from other areas of Scotland on the journey to the final.

The school community is extremely supportive of the team and we are taking a large number of pupils with us on Wednesday to spectate.

“It has been great to hear so many of the pupils, boys and girls, talking about the game and looking forward to their trip to Murrayfield
