Helensburgh Rugby captain Jonny Drake admitted his side are going to need results to go their way if they are to avoid relegation this season after their 47-25 loss to Oban on Saturday.

The Grizzlies currently sit bottom of BT West Division 1 and are now 12 points behind Oban and 16 adrift of Kilmarnock with six games left to play.

And while they have managed to escape from similar positions before, Drake said it would be a tough ask to complete the comeback this year.

He said: “It’s not looking too rosy for us but anything is still possible. It’s been done before we’ve won games at the end of the season which has seen us move our way up – but we’ve really got to pull it out this time and see what we can do.

“A lot of it will depend on other results as well. If we can get a good team out and we get players going then yes.

“We’ve got a good enough team. We’re easily good enough to be in this league. It’s just when we tend to play the teams around us, we don’t get the best of squads out – and when we play the better teams, we get a good squad out, but you want to target the teams around you, and it’s just not worked out well in that respect this year due to injuries, people having other commitments that they can’t change. It’s tough.

“We had a few backs playing in the forwards at the weekend. They put in a lot of effort in but we’re still missing key players.”

It was a tight game at Oban, with the Burgh within a score until Oban scored two late tries.

The away side scored via Kane Greggain, Aaron Sterry and Connor Slader, but it was the scrum that proved their downfall once again.

Drake added: “It’s been a problem for us the whole season. A lot of games we’ve lost due to scrums. It was the same when we played Irvine at home, they scored most of their tries from scrums so it’s one of these things we need to try and fix. But Helensburgh’s never been known to have big players.”

Helensburgh’s next game is at home to Annan, with the match starting at 2pm on Saturday at Ardencaple.
