HELENSBURGH Golf Club's annual prizegiving was this year dedicated in memory of Tom Inglis.

Tom, who was president of the Golf Club, passed away suddenly in November last year, aged 76.

Ian Irving, Captain of Helensburgh Golf Club, introduced the evening honouring the winners saying: "Tonight’s prizegiving ceremony is particularly special as we dedicate this the 116th prizegiving to the memory of our president Tom Inglis.

"A comfortable fit for sure on a night when we celebrate the winners of the 2016 golfing season because that’s also what Tom was – a winner in every sense of the word.

"It wasn’t just for his good looks, sartorial elegance. and a wide choice of neck ties that he was asked to represent organisations such as:

"The UK Ford Dealers Council, The Scottish Rugby Union, Ayr Rugby club, Helensburgh Rugby & Cricket Club to name but just a few, and why he was chosen as our president here at Helensburgh Golf Club

"He was asked to represent these organisations because he was a winner, he knew how to get the job done.

"So, as we celebrate your winning achievements and success this evening, lets also celebrate the life of our President by dedicating this evenings ceremony in his honour."

Tom rekindled his love for golf when the family moved to Helensburgh and he soon became a prominent member of the club, he was elected captain for the club's centenary year and was made honourary president in 2012.

Ian added: "One of the many contributions he made to the success of the centenary year was to donate trophies for a captain’s day competition that ensured that the day, in addition to be a gala occasion, would henceforth also have a highly competitive element.

"These trophies have until now always been known as The Captains Cups. I’m delighted to announce this evening that the Inglis family have agreed that they will from tonight be known as the Tom Inglis Trophies, and will therefore form part of his legacy here."

Members of Tom's family, his son Andy, daughter Victoria and son in law Iain, all attended the event as guests of the club while Tom's wife Liz attended as a finalist as part of the prizegiving ceremony.

Andy Inglis presented the winners of the Tom Inglis Trophies with their award and thanked the golf club in a speech prior to the toast in his father's memory which was accompanied by a glass of MacLallan Single Malt, Tom's drink of choice.

Speaking after the event, Tom's wife Liz Inglis, said: "On behalf of myself and family I would like to thank Helensburgh Golf Club for the very warm tribute to Tom at Friday’s prize giving.

"Tom had great pride in Helensburgh Golf Club and I know he would have loved to have seen just how the club moved on in the future.

"We wish Helensburgh Golf Club much success and thank all the committee and members for making the evening such a memorable one."
