Helensburgh Amateur Swimming club swimmers completed round one of the 2017 West District long course age group championships at East Kilbride in style, bringing home medals and breaking two club records in the process.

Half of the team from Helensburgh was made up from the Miller family who all performed well over the weekend.

The event was particularly memorable for swimmer Mikey Miller as it marked his debut competing at regional level.

Mikey had already done really well to qualify for the regional event and coped very well with the pressure and challenges of competing for the first time at regional level made more difficult by the event being held in a 50m pool.

Mikey swam in three events in the 11 year age group; the 100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle.

His performance in the 100m backstroke earned him a place in the final where he secured 6th place, an exceptional achievement considering it was his first outing at this level.

He also returned very respectable performances in the freestyle and breaststroke taking 10th and 14th place respectively.

His freestyle performance set a new club record in the 11 and under age group at 1.19.55, smashing the record set by Duncan Anderson in February 2009 at 1.21.83.

William Peace swimming in the 12 year age group competed in the 100m butterfly.

He secured a very respectable 12th place with a time of 1.42.25, particularly good as this was only his second time competing in a 50m pool.

Emily Miller swam in two events in the 15 year age group; the 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke securing 15th and 16th places respectively.

Alexander Johnson swimming in the 15 year age group, qualified for the final in the 100m butterfly.

He secured fourth place in the heats and fifth in the final.

In the process he broke the club long course club record previously set by him in March 2016. He also secured fourth place in the 400m freestyle, fifth in the 200m butterfly and eighth in the 100m freestyle.

Jake Miller swimming in the Male 16 and over age group secured a very respectable 10th place overall in the 100m breaststroke and an improvement of 3.71 seconds over his previous personal best time.

Kate Storey swimming in the age 16 and over age group in the 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle returned a strong performance over both of her events securing places in both finals and finishing third to take home two bronze medals.
