RHU Amateurs surrendered a lead late in the game to lose 2-1 to promotion favourites Westerlands at Hermitage Academy last Saturday.
It was a tight encounter with the game only being decided in the last five minutes.
The first half was end-to-end with the better chances falling to Rhu.
Adam McCulloch came close for Rhu when a shot from distance clipped the bar and went over. Shortly after the visitors’ goalkeeper somehow pushed the ball around the post when it looked like Graeme McCallum had scored.
At the other end Westerlands had a long throw expert who was giving Rhu’s defence some scary moments but they managed to keep them out.
Despite an all action first half there was no scoring at the break.
Rhu took the initiative at the start of the second half and were playing well, but their final pass was letting them down.
But with 65 minutes gone Rhu went ahead when Scott Kemp headed a cross back towards goal and Graeme McCallum stabbed it home.
Rhu deserved their lead, but it didn’t last long as Westerlands took advantage of some indecision in the Rhu box to level the scores.
Both teams went for the winner and with time running out it was Westerlands who got it as Rhu failed to clear their lines.
Rhu are at home to Rothesay Brandane in a league fixture this Saturday, March 11; kick-off is at 2pm.
