Helensburgh Amateur Swimming club has revamped their squad structure to encourage more younger children into the club.

The club has introduced two new squads, Bronze development and Copper, at the entry level to provide a more gradual pathway to existing competitive swimming squads - Bronze, Silver, Silver Elite and Gold.

Linking in with Scottish Swimming’s Learn to Swim National Framework, young swimmers are encouraged to come and give the club a try once they have reached levels six or above.

The Bronze Development squad meets once per week: there is no financial outlay except for a small insurance premium, allowing youngsters an introduction to the club without a substantial fee commitment.

Successful completion of Bronze Development leads to promotion to the Copper squad which meets twice per week to build endurance and work on stroke development.

Members of the Copper squad will also be gently introduced to competitive swimming by taking part in the Clyde Coast Mini League, an annual team competition which is very exciting, noisy and fantastic fun.

Young swimmers can also take part in the in house club competitions, again a relaxed environment where they can learn the relevant skills and develop their competitive spirit.

Both squads are taught in small groups, with training focused on individual swimmers’ abilities.

Coaches are supported by the Gold squad swimmers who join the swimmers in the water to pass on their skills, experience and try to help each swimmer progress to the next level in the pool.
