HELENSBURGH wheelchair tennis star Gordon Reid’s French Open ended in disappointment as he lost out in the doubles final alongside fellow Brit Alfie Hewett.

The duo, who won silver together at Rio 2016 and last year’s Wimbledon title, came trough a nerve shredding semi-final against Gustavo Fernandez and Maikel Scheffers.

Hewett and Reid broke the deadlock towards the end of the first set of the semi to win the last three games.

They subsequently recovered from 3-1 down in the deciding tie-break to beat Fernandez and Scheffers to match point before wrapping up a 6-4, 3-6, (10-8) victory.

Reid was bidding for his third successive doubles title at Rolland Garros on Saturday when the Brits took on French top seeds Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer.

But the home favourites were not to be denied in Paris as Houdet and Peifer clinched a comfortable 6-4, 6-3, win.

World number one Gordon Reid had been knocked out in the singles quarter-finals by 2016 champion Fernandez.

The 25-year-old was swept aside 6-2, 6-0 by the 23-year-old Argentine, who also beat him in last year’s final in Paris as the French Open singles crown continues to allude Reid.

But Reid's doubles partner Hewett became the first Brit to win the men’s singles wheelchair tennis title at Roland Garros.

He secured a remarkable 0-6, 7-6 (9), 6-2 victory over defending champion Fernandez in the final.
