Helensburgh Cricket Club's first XI continued their good start to the season with an impressive away win at Kilmarnock last Saturday.

Helensburgh, who now top the WDCU's second division table after winning their first three games, won the toss and chose to bat.

The early loss of Marc Christiensen for 19 brought Jono Campbell to the wicket; along with Calum Thornton, he put on an impressive 117 for the second wicket before Thornton was trapped LBW for 58.

Campbell continued his good form with the bat and despite the loss of Gregor Chambers and Aidan Keogh the scoreboard kept ticking over nicely.

Campbell was finally out for 90, by which time the score was 211-5.

This gave a platform for the middle and lower order to have a go and there were runs all the way down, with Rajitha Arachchi scoring 18, Duncan Stephens 26 and Ian Chambers 16 not out.

In the end Helensburgh were all out for 266 off exactly 50 overs.

After tea Helensburgh took an aggressive starting approach, and early wickets for Keogh and Rajitha from good catches from Chambers and Thornton reduced the home side to 21-2 to put the visitors in control.

Kilmarnock recovered with a third-wicket partnership of 89 before Campbell struck, and two more quick wickets again put Helensburgh in the driving seat with the score 122-5.

But a sixth wicket partnership of 83 had the home side apparently cruising towards victory before a mix up between the batsmen and some calm thinking by G. Chambers created a run out, 205-6.

Despite the best efforts of Ahmed for Kilmarnock (101), Helensburgh managed to clear up the lower order, eventually bowling Kilmarnock out for 224 to win by 42 runs.
