Donnie Nicholson was crowned champion at the Gents Open Stableford at Helensburgh Golf Club after a 40 point score secured him the Midway Trophy.

The competition, sponsored by M&T Builders Merchants, attracted 106 players from home and away.

The competition scratch score was one over standard but that didn’t prevent Donnie (23) scoring a very creditable 40 points.

Second place went to visitor Andrew Jacobs (Aberfeldy GC) on 39 and third place to former winner Billy Trail (13) on 38.

Last Tuesday’s gents eclectic attracted a turnout of 22 competitors, with Don Griffin winning the week with 22 points.

Paul Duerden is still setting the pace after 10 weeks with 33 eclectic points, now only one point ahead of Mark Patterson.

At the Seniors Medal last Wednesday past captain Ian Irving (10) returned a net 65 to ease Gordon Murdoch (22) into second place on a count-back.

Dereck West (20) was third. As the season progresses, the current finalists are Gordon Murdoch, Dereck West, Ian Bennet. Ian Irving, Roy Nesbitt and Jim Lillburn.

HGC’s McIntyre Seniors are now in second place in the league, one point behind leaders, Douglas Park, with recent home draw against Clober and away win against Clydebank and District.

On July 7, Helensburgh Ladies Allander team welcomed Milngavie. Two great wins by Jackie Lightfoot and Fiona Thomson, together with a closely fought half from Doreen Sneddon, gave them a well-deserved draw.
