Rhu Amateurs fought their way into the third round of the Scottish Amateur Cup with a strong second half performance to defeat Kilbirnie Amateurs 6-3 at home on Saturday.

Kilbirnie had the best of the first half in a thrilling cup tie with plenty of goals for the spectators to enjoy.

Just before kick off there was a downpour which made conditions difficult for both teams.

Kibirnie started better as Rhu struggled in the heavy conditions and it was no surprise when Scott Chesney found space and hammered the ball home from the edge of the box to put the visitors in front.

It took Rhu time to settle as Kilbirnie came close again but after 20 minutes the hosts got an equaliser when Shaun Burke found Adam McCulloch and the striker fired the ball low in to the corner of the net.

Rhu didn’t stay level for long, though, and it was Chesney again who put the visitors in front.

But the home side came back again and it was McCulloch who was first to react and steer David Holburn’s cross in to the back of the net.

With time running out towards the end of the first half, Kilbirnie went ahead again, this time from a corner, when Martyn Cairns headed in at the back post to send the visitors into the break 3-2 ahead after a frantic first half.

Rhu needed an early reply in the second period – and they got it after five minutes when Graeme McCallum put Gary Stilwell through on goal, and though his shot was well saved by the keeper, McCulloch was on hand to tap the rebound home and complete his hat-trick.

It was Rhu who were looking the stronger now and clever play by McCallum won the hosts a penalty, which he converted himself to put the home team ahead for the first time.

As Kilbirnie tried to respond, Rhu went further ahead when McCulloch outstripped the visitors defence after Scott Leishman put him through, and he calmly rounded the keeper and passed the ball in to the net.

With Kilbirnie tiring, McCulloch got his fifth for the second week in a row – this time Holburn put him through and he gave the keeper no chance. This was a hard fought cup tie against a good Kilbirnie team.

The draw for the third round, made on Tuesday of this week, handed Rhu a short away trip to Dumbarton, where they'll face St Patrick's FP of the Central Scottish AFL; the tie is due to be played on Saturday, November 4.

Rhu would like to thank their long standing sponsors, Babcock International, for their continued support and their new strip for this season.
