Helensburgh FC were in seventh heaven after beating Boswell AFC 7-1 at Toryglen on Saturday.

The visitors, who hadn’t trained during the fortnight festive break, started off very fast and within minutes had the Boswell team on the back foot.

Brooks Tadlock almost opened the scoring but his header bounced back off the post into the keeper’s arms and then a few minutes later the keeper once again thwarted the big striker when he blocked his goal-bound shot.

It wasn’t to be long though before the Burgh team opened the scoring and the honour of the first of the new year fell to Karl Johannsson, who dribbled into the box and from an acute angle coolly lifted the ball over the keeper, who had gone to ground to try and save what he thought was a shot.

Despite the opening goal favouring the visitors they didn’t push the advantage.

In fact the opposite happened - they fell out of the game completely.

All of a sudden it was the home side who were doing all the running and they had a chance to equalise after Johannsson fouled one of their players in the box.

Up stepped goalkeeper Callum O’Brien who made a terrific double save to keep the Burgh in front.

However they didn’t take heed of this let-off and just before half-time conceded a free kick outside the box.

This time the home team took advantage as the free kick found its way into the net leaving with O’Brien no chance.

With some strong words of encouragement handed out at the break the visitors upped their levels and went at the home side with renewed vigour.

Danny Johns restored the lead for them when he rose highest at a corner to head home.

This seemed to settle the visitors and they increased their lead when Tadlock made it three when the ball fell to him in the box.

That goal knocked the fight out of the home team, and Burgh took advantage.

Caleb Phipps made it four with a run into the box finished with a low shot into the corner of the net and Tadlock made it five with a well-taken individual goal.

With full-time approaching, Burgh finished off a good day’s work when sub Steven Martin notched the sixth and then shortly after number seven to celebrate his own birthday and a fine win to start the year.

Next up is a home game against league leaders Newshot, kick-off at 2pm at Hermitage Academy on Saturday.
