Helensburgh AFC were beaten 2-0 by league leaders Newshot in a top-of-the-table clash at Hermitage Academy on Saturday.

With the home side having inflicted Newshot’s only league defeat of the season, the visitors were always going to be dangerous opponents, and proved that way as they left with the three points.

The game was one of few chances, as both teams got bogged down in a dour midfield battle.

It was the home side who had the opportunity to draw first blood as Brooks Tadlock was played in on goal by a delightful pass from Park, however the big striker rushed his shot and dragged it past the post.

The game ebbed and flowed but both keepers were largely quiet, as both defences were on top.

However with a couple of minutes left of the first half the Erskine side broke the deadlock.

The ball was played forward to the Newshot forward, and though hemmed in on the goal line he managed to get in a cross which found his fellow striker free, his looping header beating keeper O’Brien’s desperate dive.

The second half was much like the first in terms of chances created, although the home side did push on in an attempt to level the game.

Two of the home side’s opportunities fell to Adam Sharkey, but on both occasions the well-drilled Newshot defence blocked the shot.

With minutes remaining Burgh were awarded a free kick just inside their opponents half, with Burgh throwing all their players forward.

This, however, let Newshot break on the counter, and scored an easy second to kill off the game.

Helensburgh will now be relying on Newshot to slip up in the run-in to have any chance of catching the leaders.
