Craighelen’s tennis teams enjoyed mixed fortunes as they took to the court for their latest matches.

The ladies’ first team of Sue Black and Susan Bell, Jackie Morris and Sarah Colman, Sandra Juster and Anna Scullion met Rutherglen came up against a strong side in their first match of the season.

Opponents Rutherglen have been climbing up the leagues year on year and won by nine sets to love.

The ladies’ second team, meanwhile, had a tough schedule playing three matches in four days. Against Paisley, Louise Robertson and Lesley Reeve were in good form, winning their matches 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, while Barbara McCall and Lesley McGowan had a close match but lost by 5-7, 4-6, 2-6, while Catherine Gould and Fiona Macpherson lost 2-6, 3-6 , 3-6.

In their next match the team lost by the same 3-6 margin to Woodend’s fourth team.

Lesley McGowan and Louise played well and won 6-1, 7-6, 2-6, but Barbara and Doreen Flatman lost 4-6, 6-4, 1-6 and Catherine and Fiona lost 3-6, 1-6, 0-6.

In their third match of the week the team travelled to face Nuffield Milngavie’s therd team, where in less than ideal conditions, they lost by six sets to three, the three sets being won, against strong opposition, by Louise and Lesley Reeve , 6-4, 6-0, 6-3. The other couples were, Barbara and Lesley McGowan , Catherine and Fiona Barbara, Lesley, Fiona and Catherine also played

Elsewhere, the ladies’ third team of Anne Barrie and Lorna Hunter, Dari Young and Fiona Thomson, and Gwen Burbidge and Eilidh Colman picked up their third win of the season, beating Kirkhill’s fourth team 9-0.

The team consisted of Anne Barrie and Lorna Hunter, Dari Young and Fiona Thomson , Gwen Burbidge and Eilidh Colman.

And there was another good win for Craighelen , this time in the over-60s league, as the ladies’ team beat Newlands 4-2.

Susan Bell and Fiona Thomson won 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, while Margo Lamb and Gwen Burbidge lost the first two sets 2-6, 2-6, but came back well to win their third set 6-3.

The Craighelen men’s over 60s team, meanwhile, came up against excellent opposition in their first league match and the team of Dave Thorpe, Jim McGowan, Russell Graves and John Middleton were well beaten by Hamilton by six sets to love. The team was Dave Thorpe and Jim McGowan, Russell Graves and John Middleton.
