TEN-YEAR-OLD Alice Cummings set the pace with two gold medals and one bronze as five young Helensburgh swimmers set personal best times in 14 events at the Dumfries Spring Meet.

Alice, the youngest of the Helensburgh swimmers at the event, recorded three personal bests on her way to securing gold in the 100m individual medley and the 50m freestyle and bronze in the 50m breaststroke.

The pick of Alice’s personal bests was an impressive 7.19 second improvement in the 200m freestyle.

She also swam in the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 50 and 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke, securing four fourth-place medals and one sixth-place finish.

Meanwhile, 11-year-old Ethan Parsons recorded personal bests in three of his seven events in the 11-12 age group – the 50m freestyle and 50m and 100m backstroke.

Sandy Barbour, 12, secured four PB times in the same age group, including a massive 17.86 second improvement on his best in the 200m freestyle, while he also knocked 6.15 seconds off his 100m breaststroke record and improved on his PBs in the 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle.

Still in the 11-12 age group, the 12-year-old pair of Thomas Forsyth and Michael Payne each secured two PB times – Thomas in the 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke, and Michael in the more arduous 200m individual medley and the ‘splash and dash’ 50m butterfly.
